Environmental scanning, strategic behaviour, organizational characteristics, and performance in small firms

Abstract


The focus of this article is on the interaction between strategy and organizational environment within small firms, and its objective is to analyze the relation among strategic behavior, environment scanning, organizational characteristics and performance. We have chosen the quantitative approach, survey-type, applying questionnaires, and data analysis, using the variance analysis technique to verify the differences existing among prospectors, analyst, defensive, and reactive firms in terms of their scanning effort and use of information sources. The main results indicate that prospector firms scan competitors and technological aspects, and access internal and written-type sources more frequently than the ones that adopt other types of behavior.
